Compact and hand-held electrical data loggers are powered by batteries and feature an internal microprocessor, one or more sensors and data storage. These devices can be either stand-alone single units with internal sensors, small enough to fit a basic hand palm, or multi-channel data collection instruments with multiple external sensors. Some models may also be suitable for use in other applications.

While a data logger is considered a stand-alone device it needs to be connected to a computer and specific software for analysing the collected data. This stand-alone characteristic of this testing equipment involves an on-board memory that is used to store acquired data. Some models feature large memories to accommodate various days, or even months, of unattended recording.

Electrical data loggers come also with different types of data graphing and analysis software packages. As a rule of thumb, you should look for software that is Windows® and MAC-based. The software should allow you to easily and quickly perform tasks such as launching the data logger, configuring parameters and offloading data.
