Important Things to Consider When Buying a Loading Ramp

Although simple, loading ramps are one of the most important pieces of equipment in warehouses and loading bays. They simplify the difficult task of loading containers with heavy items which can be not only challenging, but quite dangerous as well. Shipping container loading ramps eliminate this problem completely by providing you with a clear path to load and unload containers into vehicles. But how do you pick the right loading ramp that will ensure your loading experience is effective, efficient and most importantly, safe?

The first thing to consider when buying shipping container loading ramps is its weight capacity. The ramp should be able to withstand the weight of the heaviest containers you’re shipping, plus the weight of the vehicle loading the container, and some extra just to be safe. You’ll easily find ramps that can withstand weights upwards of 3 tonnes. However, something to keep in mind is that the ramps themselves can be quite heavy and weight around 200-300kg depending on its size and the materials its made of.

The next thing you need to consider is the ramp’s width. The width can dictate how much room for error you have, and what type of equipment you can use for loading and unloading. For example, if the ramp is too narrow, you can probably use a trolley but not a forklift. That being said, measure the width of your largest piece of material handling equipment and buy a ramp that’s a little bit wider than that.

Further, you need to consider the ramp length and surface. The weight capacity of the ramp is only valid if you choose a ramp that has an appropriate length. Only then will the ramp ensure proper support and stability throughout the entire loading process. Additionally, the surface needs to offer some sort of traction to support the material handling equipment. If the surface is smooth, it can cause slippage even if the ramp is at a low incline.

And of course, you want to consider the price and quality of the ramp. The price can vary depending on the ramp’s size, the materials it’s made from and its features. Expensive isn’t necessarily better, but most of the time, that’s the case. The quality, on the other hand, is determined by the ramp’s strength and ease-of-use. You can find a wide range of loading ramps online, all of which differ in capacity, length, width, materials they’re made from and the features they have, allowing you to pick one that’s just right for your applications.
